General Deepak Kapoor PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, SM is the 23rd and present Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army.

General Kapoor took over the reins of the world\'s second largest fighting force on September 30,2007 at noon from General Joginder Jaswant Singh. The outgoing Army chief handed over the baton to General Kapoor at the Defence Headquarters. The newly appointed general has declared that accelerating the modernization of the forces would be among his top priorities.

Born in 1948, he was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery on 11 June 1967. Higher Command Course at the National Defence College (NDC) in New Delhi. He served as the Chief Operations Officer for UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia - Phase 2) during 1994-95 and was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in January 1996.

General Kapoor was vice-chief of the Army before taking over as the Chief of Army Staff. He has also been the Northern Army Commander in the past.
